Why XML Sitemap needs to be an important part of SEO?

Sitemap.xml is a file created for the purpose of quick indexing. This guides the web crawler in much better way to index the pages of a website. Webmaster list all the pages in sitemap which he/she wants to get indexed quickly.

You can create this file using free tool or you can create your own. The below is the syntax of sitemap file.

Now we are going to discuss each tag in detail:

  • 1. urlset: This is the required tag and it’s a reference to the protocol standards. This the mandatory tag.
  • 2. url: You need to specify this tag as a container for each url. This the mandatory tag.
  • 3. loc: Under loc tag you specify the URL of your website which you want to index. This the mandatory tag.
  • 4. lastmod: The date of the last modification of the file. This is not a mandatory field.
  • 5. Changefreq: Based on your requirement you can set the change frequency to always, hourly, daily, weekly, monthly, yearly and never. This not a mandatory tag. Based on the value crawler crawls the pages.
  • 6. Priority: Priority is not a mandatory tag. You can leave it. The value ranges from 0.0 to 1.0. The value 1.0 means the page is very important and 0.0 is the least important page.
    The default value of the crawler is 0.5.


Note:

  • 1. While uploading the sitemap.xml to the server. You need to upload it in the root directory.
  • 2. For quick indexing submit it to the “Google Search Console” previously known by “Google Webmaster”.


What are the significance of Sitemap.xml?

  • 1. Sitemap improve the crawling of your website.
  • 2. The website is new and wants quick indexing.
  • 3. Website is very large and having huge number of pages but few of the pages are not reachable. In such case use Sitemap.xml.
