Destination Goal of Google Analytics & Its Use For Tracking Visitors

I think every webmasters are using Google Analytics to measure the traffic flow, Acquisition, Behavior and many more. But do all they know the types of Goal Google Analytics offers. In this post we are going to discuss in detail the types of Goal and its use in tracking the visitor.

Types of Goal –

  • 1. Destination
  • 2. Duration
  • 3. Page/Screen per session
  • 4. Event

Now, let’s discuss in detail the types of “Destination Goal” and its use for webmaster.

Under Google Analytic dashboard you can set the “Goal” by following the below path –

Google Analytics Dashboard –> Admin –> View –> Goals

Click on “New Goal” Button. This will show all the four types of Goal. So, based on your requirement choose the one and start.

Destination Goal Overview –

Destination goal basically used for the purpose of tracking the user who landed on a particular pages. Suppose you want to track the how many user landed on the thank you page after filling the signup form. In such case “Destination Goal” is perfect.

Using funnel you can track the path of visitor which he/she took before reaching the destination.

The below print screen will give you a brief overview of destination goal.


Enter the name of the Goal based on your choice then click on “Continue” button. This will take user to the next window. The next window will ask you to fill following details: –

  • 1. Specify the destination URL.
  • 2. If you want you can specify the value. This is not mandatory. This is optional.
  • 3. If you want to track the path of the visitor who landed on the destination URL you can set it. This is also optional.

Destination goal record the transaction based on the URL which you enter in the field. You can enter the “Fixed URL” or can customize using “Regular Expression”. If you have the specific URL which you want to track. Suppose I am having a thank you page which appear after filling the form of different pages of the website. In such case we can go for the Fixed URL method. In Destination Coolum we can select the “Equal to” and then input the complete URL of thank you page.

Important Point to Remember:

Destination –Enter the requested URL. We can use the following format:

  • a) /formal-shoes/abc-shoes.html
  • b) /formal-shoes/blue-shoes.php

“Value” and “Funnel” is optional.

Once done we can click on the “Verify this Goal” and the click on “Save”.

Now we are going to explain all the available possibility in Destination.

Match Type Options –

  • 1. Begin with
  • 2. Equals to
  • 3. Regular Expression

Begin with – There are various website that have dynamics generated URL and in order to track such pages you can use begin with option. This help you to track the user.

Suppose I am having a website and for each user the checkout page generate the new URL dynamically. In such case we can go with this method.

For example the url is http:/// and for each user the url change. To track the user we can set /checkout.cgi?page=1 and then select the Begin with option.

Equal to – Equal to option work perfect if you have the fixed url. You just simply specify the URL.

For example the URL is You just enter the same URL in the field provided

Or you can mention the directory path only as mentioned above.

Regular Expression – Using of “Regular Expression”

  • ^/electronics/.* – when any page within the electronics directory viewed the goal will match.
  • electronics.html|shoes.html – when user view any of the page relating to electronic or shoes the goal will match.
